Surfing in California: Best Spots to Surf
Surfing is synonymous with California. With hundreds of miles of coastline along the Pacific Ocean it is not difficult to find a place to surf, from San Diego to San Francisco. Some of the best surfing spots are:
Malibu- well known as a residence for the rich and famous, this area is also a surfing mecca. Malibu is home to three extremely popular surf beaches: Zuma, Little Dume, and Surfrider. Surfers have been flocking to the waves in Malibu since the 1920′s.
Huntington Beach- nicknamed “Surf City USA”, Huntington Beach is another surfing spot that has been popular since the 1920′s. The wind patterns here make exceptional waves, so it is no surprise that Huntington Beach is the home of the U.S. surf team.
Santa Cruz- this beach boasts the first historical recording of surfing along the California coast; in 1885 the first waves were surfed by three brothers. The curved shaped of the coastline here gets waves from all directions, making it an excellent surfing spot.
Mavericks- when the weather is just right this surf spot, located near Half Moon Bay in San Francisco, can produce monster waves up to 70 feet high. When this occurs Mavericks becomes an excellent surfing spot, and surfers will travel for miles to catch one of the huge waves.
