Pyramid Lake-
Pyramid Lake is located in the San Gabriel Mountains along Interstate 5 approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 50 miles south of Bakersfield. The lake has a surface area of 1,360 acres and 21 miles of shoreline, most of which is accessible only by boat. Pyramid is open year round, except Christmas, New Years Day, and Thanksgiving, from 7 a.m. to sunset. Day use only. Boat rentals as well as food and fuel are available at Pyramid Marina. The lake is fed primarily by the California Aqueduct and is a major drinking water resource for the Los Angeles area. As for the angler, Pyramid harbors a wide variety of fish species, most popular are the huge 30lb.+ striped bass, catfish, trout, crappie, bluegill, largemouth; even some steelhead and some of the most abundant, chunky smallmouth bass in the state!

Lake Piru
Lake Piru is located 53 miles northwest of Los Angeles in the Los Padres National Forest at an elevation of 1,055 feet above sea level. Piru is open from sunrise to sunset, year round, except Christmas. Boat rentals are available at the marina as well as concessions, licenses, tackle, and fuel. Well maintained campgrounds with showers are located at the lake entrance, first come first served basis. Very nice modern picnicking areas with large group sites available are located at Reasoner Canyon. Piru has proved to be a good all around fishing lake over the years for many Southern Californian anglers. Largemouth bass and catfish are most popular with quality catches of both common. Lake Castaic
Lake Castaic is located along Interstate 5 approximately 70 miles south of Bakersfield and 35 miles north of Los Angeles. Castaic Lake is part of the California State Water Project and is operated by the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department. Lake Castaic has a surface area of 2,230 acres and the Afterbay Lagoon has 180 surface acres. The lake is open year round, except Christmas, from sunup to sundown, day use only. Boat rentals, snack bar, fuel, bait and tackle are available from the marina located at the east launch area. The After Bay Lagoon just below the lake offers camping, boating, and 24 hour fishing from shore. Lake Castiac is known around the world as one of the premier "Big Bass" lakes, and believe me from personal experience big bass are abundant here. Buena Vista Lakes

Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area is located off of Taft Highway, 23 miles southwest of Bakersfield and 12 miles east of Taft. Lake Evans and the larger Lake Webb make up the popular 1,586 acre Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area, operated by the Kern County Parks and Recreation Department. Complete modern facilities for camping, picnicking, swimming, and boating are available here as well as food and fuel. Lake Evans has a surface area of 86 acres and Lake Webb has 873 acres. All boating is allowed in both lakes, however Lake Evans is restricted to a 5 MPH speed limit. The lakes close at 10 p.m. but 24 hour fishing is allowed in the campground area. Both lakes are very popular for big catfish, huge striped bass, crappie, and an occasional sturgeon. In the winter months Lake Evans is continually stocked with trout to 5 lb. Lake Isabella

Lake Isabella is situated in the beautiful Kern River Valley along Highway 178 and 155 approximately 45 miles northwest of Bakersfield. Lake Isabella is fed by the "Mighty Kern River" and is a major irrigation water resource for the San Joaquin Valley farmer. The surface of the lake is 11,400 acres with a shoreline of 38 miles. Numerous well maintained camping facilities are located around the lake. Fishing is allowed 24 hours and the summer months offer some "cool" catfishing. There are three marinas on the lake where boat rentals, tackle, and snacks are available. Lake Isabella is well known by local anglers for the excellent catfish, crappie, and pre-spawn bass fishing. California Aqueduct

The California Aqueduct is the principal water conveyance structure for the California State Water Project and is the first statewide water resources development in the United States. The Aqueduct runs from the Delta east of San Francisco, south 293 miles to the Tehachipi Mountains where it is pumped over the mountains to Los Angeles. The Aqueduct consists of a concrete canal, 40 ft. wide at the base, and has an average depth flow of 30 feet. Many areas along the Aqueduct are accessible for fishing, which can be enjoyed day or night. The California Aqueduct holds a wide variety of fish species, including striped and largemouth bass, catfish, carp, bluegill, and crappie. Upper Kern River

This beautiful 35 mile stretch of the Upper Kern River from Lake Isabella to Quaking Aspen offers a wide variety of year round recreation from rock climbing to rafting. With the cooler climate, great camping areas, and excellent fishing, the Upper Kern has become a very popular summer vacation get-away for many Southern Californian's. The Forest Service and CLM maintains six developed campgrounds as well as several dispersed camping areas along this stretch of the upper Kern River. The Upper Kern is well stocked with catchable size rainbow trout by the Department of Fish and Game with some areas also holding a decent population of native trout. Middle Kern River

This majestic, rugged, canyon portion of the Kern River extends from Lake Isabella to the Upper Richbar picnic area. This portion of the Kern River has very steep canyon walls and extremely torrent water flows during spring run-off. The middle Kern River offers a variety of outdoor activities as well as some fine camping areas, however the only developed campgrounds are Hobo and Sandy Flat. Trout, as well as catfish, smallmouth, and largemouth bass are abundant in this portion of the river. Lower Kern River

This portion of the Kern River extends from the Lower Richbar picnic area to Hart Park. Although the Kern River is considered to be a navigable waterway, only a small portion can be safely used by rafters. This 20 mile stretch of the Kern offers a wide variety of fishing from night-time catfishing to topwater smallmouth action. Lake Ming and Hart Park are just a few miles from Bakersfield along this lower portion and offer some fine picnicking, swimming, boating, and camping. Lake Ming

Lake Ming is located 10 miles northeast of Bakersfield, off of Hwy. 178 along Alfred Harrell Hwy. Lake Ming consists of 107 surface acres of water and is fed by the "Mighty Kern" River. Lake Ming is very well known for speed boat racing and water skiing. Fishing is allowed from specified areas along the shoreline, October through March, 8 a.m. to sundown. There are 50 well maintained campsites located near Lake Ming, along the Kern River, with hot showers and plenty of grass; no hook-ups. Boat rentals and concessions are not available, swimming, or tube fishing are not allowed. The local angler knows Lake Ming holds a large population of 5 lb.+ largemouth bass as well as numerous big bluegill. Lake Success

Lake Success rests at an elevation of 640 feet in the Southern Sierra foothills, 8 miles east of Porterville. Construction of the earth filled dam was completed in 1961. The lake has a surface area of 2,450 acres with 30 miles of shoreline and holds 82,000 acre feet of water. Boating is allowed 24 hours and the summer night bass action is excellent. Boat rentals, bait, tackle, food, and fuel are available at Success Marina located on the east side of the lake. Overnight houseboat rentals are available also from Success Marina. A well maintained campground "with hot showers" rests on the east side of the lake. The 1,400 acre wildlife area on the north west side of the lake is open for public use with hunting allowed, shotguns only, during appropriate seasons. Lake Success is best known for the fantastic pre-spawn bass bite, as well as quality year round bass action. Lake Kaweah

Lake Kaweah is at an elevation of 694 feet in the foothills 17 miles east of Visalia. The construction of Terminus Dam was complete in 1962, forming Lake Kaweah. The lake has a surface area of 1,945 acres and 22 miles of oak and granite covered shoreline, during spring run-off Kaweah stores 143,000 acre feet of water. Kaweah is open 24 hours for boating and fishing, houseboats are available for overnight rental at Kaweah Marina. A well maintained campground with showers is located at Horse Creek. Kaweah Lake has a very large population of decent size largemouth bass that offer great year round bass action, bluegill and catfish are also very popular and plentiful. Lake Woollomes

Lake Wollomes is located 25 miles north of Bakersfield and 6 miles northwest of Delano at an elevation of 321 feet. This small 300 acre lake is owned by the Bureau of Reclamation and operated under a lease by the County of Kern. The primary purpose of Wollomes is that of an equalizing reservoir for irrigation purposes. Wollomes is open year round from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Boating is permitted, however no motor, gas, or electric are allowed. Row boats are available for rental as well as sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats. There are 9 acres of grassed picnic areas with BBQ grills, playground equipment, and swimming, no camping available. Concessions are available from March to November with food, drinks, supplies, and bait available. Despite the size of the lake the some very large fish are consistently caught with catfish and bass to 10 lb. common. Lake Lopez

Lopez Lake is located in the foothills above Arroyo Grande approximately 200 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Lopez is operated by the General Services Department of San Luis Obispo County. Lake lopez contains about 960 surface acres of water for year round fishing and boating. Boat rentals are available, including pontoon, canoes, fishing, and ski boats. Camping is available with 350 well maintained campsites, some with electricity. The village store located by the boat ramp has food, fuel, bait, tackle, and other supplies. Lopez is a fun fishing lake with plenty of structure and fine largemouth and catfish action. Lake Nacimiento

Lake Nacimiento rests in the west coastal foothills approximately 240 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Nacimiento is a large lake with 167 miles of shoreline and 5,370 surface acres of water. Lake Nacimiento is open 24 hours a day, year round and all night fishing is permitted. Bass, pontoon, ski, and paddle boats are available for rental from the marina. Numerous campsites, some with full hook-ups are located at the lake, restroom and hot showers are available. A restaurant, groceries, supplies, fuel, bait and tackle are located at the resort near the lake. Since the introduction of white bass in 1965 the species has thrived providing some excellent, fast action fishing. Lake San Antonio

San Antonio is located in the west coast foothills, approximately 250 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Lake San Antonio is open year round 24 hours per day to enjoy this huge lake with 64 miles of shoreline day or night. Boat rentals are available at the marina including pontoon, fishing, jet-skis, and ski boats. San Antonio has picnicking and camping facilities with full hook-ups at the lake. Stores are located on both sides of the lake with a wide variety of bait, tackle, food, fuel, and camping needs. All water sports are permitted with some very nice beach areas for swimming. San Antonio contains a wide variety of fish species, most popular with fishermen are the huge catfish and abundance of quality largemouth bass. Santa Margarita

The beautiful Santa Margarita Lake is situated in the west coastal foothills about 220 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Santa Margarita is open year round, sunrise to sunset; closed Christmas. Boating is permitted, however, no jet-skis or water-skiing. Camping along the lake is limited to group camping and a few others campsites with no hook-ups. The Marina Store has gas, food, bait and tackle, and various other supplies you might need. Santa Margarita is an excellent fishing lake with crappie, largemouth, striped bass, and catfish most popular. Lake Cachuma

Lake Cachuma is located 115 miles northwest of Los Angeles in the scenic Santa Ynez Valley at an elevation of 650 feet above sea level. The lake holds a average 3,100 surface acre feet of water. Cachuma is open year round 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with 24 hour camping available at the lake. Boating is permitted, however no water-skiing or body contact with the water. Boat rentals are available at the marina. A well maintained camping facility with 500 campsites are available "with hot showers" on a first come first served basis. Cachuma Store has gasoline, groceries, and camping supplies. Bait, tackle, and licenses are available from Cachuma Boat Rentals. Lake Cachuma is a fine fishing lake and often produces trophy largemouth bass over 10 lbs. Lake Casitas

Lake Casitas is located 78 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 12 miles north of Ventura off of Highway 150. Casitas has a surface area of 2,500 acres and rests at an elevation of 600 feet above sea level. Casitas is open year round, sunrise to sunset for fishing, boating, and picnicking, with camping available. Boat rentals are available at the marina as well as bait, tackle, licenses, food, and fuel. Lake Casitas is another one of Southern California's "Big Bass" lakes with a monster 21 lb., 3 oz. largemouth holding the current lake record. Catfish are also very popular with quality channel catfish to 40 lb. caught yearly. The lake also holds a large population of red ear sunfish, crappie, and trout. Puddingstone Lake

Puddingstone rests at an elevation of 940 feet approximately 30 miles from Los Angeles. Puddingstone Dam was built in 1928 as a flood control reservoir for the Los Angeles Basin, holding about 253 surface acres of water. The lake is open year round, seven days a week, sunrise to 10 p.m. in the Summer months, sunrise to 7 p.m. in the Winter. Night fishing is permitted from the shore. Boat rentals, bait and tackle, food, drinks, and fuel are available at the dock and store. Camping, group camping, as well as full RV service are available. Boating, sailing, water-skiing and jet-skis are permitted with restrictions. Although Puddingstone is very well known for the quality catfish produced year-round, trout, bass, and crappie are also abundant. Frank G. Big Bear

Big Bear is located 89 miles east of the Los Angeles area in the San Bernadino National Forest. The lake is open year round from sunrise to sunset with boat rentals available from several marinas. Any supplies you might need can be purchased from stores on the North or South shores. Waterskiing and swimming are allowed. Several improved public campgrounds are located in the Big Bear area with Serrano providing RV hook-ups and showers. Big Bear offers excellent trout fishing as the DFG plants over 300,000 pounds annually. The Big Bear Fishing Association makes several supplemental plants with trophy size trout. Catfish, crappie and largemouth bass are also available in good numbers. Lake Silverwood

Lake Silverwood is located 30 miles north of San Bernadino on the north side of the San Bernadino Mountains at an elevation of 3,378 feet above sea level. Silverwood is open year round; April 1st through September 30th - 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; October 1st through March 31st - 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Boat rentals are available at the marina. Swimming, Water-skiing and jet-skis are allowed in designated areas of the lake. Silverwood has 136 individual campsites, no hook-ups, showers are available, reservations mandatory during the summer months. The nearest grocery store is located approximately 5 miles from the lake, however, concessions are available at the boat ramp and swimming areas. Silverwood holds a large population of huge striped bass and catfish, with largemouth bass and trout a close second. Lake Perris

Lake Perris is located 70 miles east of Los Angeles and 80 miles north of San Diego and is the last lake in the California State Water Project chain. Perris is open year round, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. for day use; 24 hours for campers; 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the summer. Boat rentals are available at the marina. Swimming, water-skiing, tubing, and jetskis are permitted. Improved camping facilities are located at the lake with full hook-ups available, reservations are welcome. Concessions and a store are located at the lake providing food, fuel, drinks, bait and tackle, and camping supplies. Perris has been open since April 1974 providing fine quality catches of largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill. Perris is an excellent lake for the entire family. Lake Skinner

Lake Skinner is located 70 miles northeast of San Diego at an elevation of 1,479 feet. Skinner is open year round from 6 a.m. to sunset. Swimming, tubing, or water-skiing are not allowed in the lake. Boat rentals are available from the marina for both fishing and pontoon boats. There are 260 campsites with full hook-ups available, reservations welcome. Skinner has a complete campground store that sells groceries, fuel, bait and tackle, drinks, and camping supplies. Skinner has been open for recreation since October 1976 providing excellent largemouth bass and catfish action. Irvine Lake

Irvine Lake is a private reservoir operated by the Andersons Company. The lake rests in the foothills seven miles east of the City of Orange. Irvine Lake is open year round from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.; 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. for night fishing May through November. Boat rentals are available at the marina, however, no water-skiing or jet-skis allowed. A store and cafe are located at the lake providing food, bait and tackle, and other supplies. A strict catch and release policy is enforced for bass, limits apply for other species. Irvine Lake is a "quantity and quality" fishing lake, producing some huge trout, catfish, and sturgeon weekly. Lake Henshaw

Lake Henshaw is located 120 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 60 miles northeast of San Diego. Henshaw is open year round from 6:30 a.m. to sundown. Boat rentals are available at the marina. No sailing, jet-skis, swimming, or tubing is allowed in the lake. A spacious camping area with modern facilities and full service hook-ups are available on a first come, first served basis. The resort store carries a basic variety of food, bait and tackle. For a change of pace, a restaurant is located at the resort for a meal away from camp. Be aware, the nearest gas station is located 12 miles from the lake. Lake Henshaw is a prime fishing lake in a beautiful surrounding, a relaxing place for a fishing get-away. Lake Wohlford

Lake Wohlford is located 41 miles from San Diego at an elevation of 1500 feet. Wohlford is more than 100 years old and is one of the oldest reservoirs in Southern California containing 146 surface acres of water. Lake Wohlford is open sunrise to sunset from December to September, seven days per week. Boat rentals are available at the ramp area. No swimming or tubing allowed at the lake. Wohlford has two campgrounds near the lake, one on the north and south shore, with full hook-ups available. Both Wohlford Resort and Oakdale have stores with food, drinks, fuel, bait and tackle, and miscellaneous camping supplies. Wohlford has been a fine fishing lake for many years. Bass, catfish, trout, bluegill, and crappie are all abundant with huge catfish caught weekly and trout planted yearly up to July 4th.
